Catriona Matthew makes top ten as Wie wins Invitational
Scotland’s Catriona Matthew finished joint eighth after a final round 71 as Michelle Wie finally claimed her breakthrough victory as a professional at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational Tournament in Guadalajara in Mexico.
Wie, who first hit the headlineds when she qualified for an LPGA Tour event at 12 and then turned professional at 15, shot a final round 69 for a 13 under par total and won by two shots from fellow-American, Paula Creamer (70).
"It sounds like a cliché, but it feels awesome," said Wie, who hit a 30-yard bunker shot to a foot to close out with a birdie. "Fantastic actually. For sure, it's definitely (a monkey) off my back. I think that hopefully life will be a lot better, but I still have a lot of work to do." ??
Wie has had numerous top tens in majors, but lost her way after breaking a wrist in 2007. But she joined the LPGA Tour this season and was a star of the US winning team at the Solheim Cup in September.
She started the final round tied with American Cristie Kerr and made a move with birdies at the first and third and was out in two under par.
Another birdie at 11 gave her the outright lead, but she dropped a shot at the 12th. However, Creamer bogeyed the 14th and 17th and Kerr dropped shots at the 15th and 16th to drop out of the hunt.
Matthew, the Ricoh Women’s British Open Champion, had four birdies in her final round and finished as the best of the Europeans on five under par. It was a third top ten in nine starts for the North Berwick 40-year-old who missed the first six months of the year after the arrival of second daughter, Sophie, in May.
