Matthew opens with three under par round in Ottawa
Scotland's Catriona Matthew birdied her last two holes for a fine opening round of three under par 69 and was just three shots behind defending champion Lorena Ochoa at the CN Canadian Open in Ottawa.
The 37-year-old had five birdies altogether and was on the same mark as world No.3 Suzann Pettersen as Ochoa set her sights on a seventh win of a remarkable season on the LPGA Tour.
Annika Sorenstam, who has struggled with her form since she announced her imminent retirement in May, showed she still has titles in her sights with eight birdies in a 67.
But not such a good day for the other Scots. Janice Moodie posted a 76 and Mhairi McKay struggled to a 78.
At the SC4 Wales Open on the Ladies' European Tour, Germany's Martina Eberl was the first day leader on seven under par 65 at Machynys Peninsula near Llanelli. Clare Queen, on 71, the best of the Scots in a tie for 28th place.
