Colin Montgomerie issues stark warning to potential Wentworth absentees
Colin Montgomerie has vowed to axe Europe’s top stars from his Ryder Cup squad if they fail to appear at May’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
Sergio García, Padraig Harrington and Ian Poulter have all skipped the European Tour’s flagship event in recent years.
But the 46-year-old Scot, who will lead Europe’s attempt to win back golf’s most coveted team trophy at Celtic Manor next October, insist he won’t tolerate any absences next spring.
"It is in everyone's interests to play in our PGA Championship," he said
"I've thought that our PGA has been poorly supported by some players for some time but now, as captain, I am in a position to say something."
“Let me just say that that is for each player, whoever he is, to decide how much that [not turning up] might count against him."
