Colin Montgomerie will lead a European team against Asia in the Royal Trophy in Thailand in January 2010.

The Ryder Cup captain replaces Seve Ballesteros in the role, with the Spaniard still receiving treatment after collapsing with a brain tumour a year ago.

And Montgomerie admitted he is delighted to be handed the role as the countdown to the 38th Ryder Cup in Wales continues.

"It is an excellent chance for me to spend time with some key players ahead of the Ryder Cup," said Montgomerie, who will be bidding to regain the trophy for Europe following a 10-6 reverse earlier this year.

"I am excited about being captain and representing Europe as a player."

"I am really pleased to be representing Europe in Thailand and am determined to regain the Royal Trophy for Europe."
