Colin Montgomerie withdraws from US Open qualifiers after poor final round at Wentworth
Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie has withdrawn from this week's US Open qualifiers after a disastrous final round at the PGA Championships at Wentworth.
The 45-year-old had been in contention to register a record-equalling fourth championship at the Surrey course going into the final day.
But Montgomerie hit a four-over par 76 on Sunday to drop from tenth to 35th in the standings to ruin an otherwise impressive showing.
And the eight-time European Tour Order of Merit winner said: "The European Open next week and the Wales Open the week after are two more huge tournaments for me.
"In order to ensure I am fully prepared, I have decided to withdraw."
Paul Casey held off the challenge of Ross Fisher to take the title courtesy of a 17-under-par scorecard.
