Colin Montgomerie finishes one shot off the top ten in Spain
Colin Montgomerie finished one shot shy of his first top ten Tour finish for almost 18 months after carding a final-round 68 at the Castello Masters.
The 46-year-old Ryder Cup captain’s three-under-par round secured a share of 12th place with Welshman Jamie Donaldson.
Montgomerie racked up seven birdies without dropping a shot on the penultimate day to put himself in contention.
But bogies on the fifth and the 17th eventually did for his challenge, with Michael Jonzon holing an 18-foot birdie at the last to take the tournament.
Fellow Scot Andrew Coltart finished one in a share of eighth – one shot better than Monty - after shooting 67 over the final 18 holes.
David Drysdale’s final-round 71 saw him slip to an 18th place finish on the final day while Richie Ramsay’s 66 earned him a share of 21st.
