Scotland's Colin Montgomerie shot a 67 to finish the day tied for seventh with six other players after the opening round of the Johnnie Walker Classic in Perth on Thursday.

Montgomerie is level pegging with a group including Ireland's Peter Lawrie, New Zealand amateur leader Danny Lee and American Anthony Kang, winner of last week's Maybank Malaysian Open.

Robert-Jan Derksen of Holland fired the best round of his European Tour career, an eight-under-par 64, to take a overall one-stroke lead after the opening round.
