Mhairi McKay becomes the third Scottish 'Mum' on the Ladies European Tour
Mhairi McKay has joined Janice Moodie and Catriona Matthew as the a Scottish ‘Mum' on the LPGA Tour. The 34-year-old and her American husband, Dave Smith, have become proud parents to Angus Albert McKay Smith.
California-based McKay, the 2003 Australian Women’s Open Champion, has been a member of the US-based LPGA circuit since 1998 and has played in two Solheim Cups. She hopes to return to competitive golf before the end of the season.
Moodie, whose son Craig is three in September, is currently the only Scot on Tour and is competing in this week’s Michelob ULTRA Open in Virginia. Matthew is due to have her second daughter this month – Katie was two in December.
Matthew, the Scottish No.1, won the HSBC Basil Cup in January and intends to make her return to the circuit at the Evian Masters in France in July. The North Berwick golfer also hopes to be picked for her fourth Solheim Cup in Illinois in August.
She will need to depend on a captain’s wild card from Alison Nicholas, and the team will be named at the conclusion of the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes on August 2.
