Jack McDonald seals victory at Scottish boys' open
Kilmarnocks Jack McDonald overcame a third round wobble to seal victory in the Scottish boys open at Ladybank.
The 16-year-old Scottish Golf Union Academy player shot 69 and 70 in his first two rounds before a sloppy 76 cost him the lead going into the final round.
But McDonald rediscovered his touch on the greens and carded a level par 71 to finish two over and become the first player for 21 years to win both the national title and the George McDonald Memorial Bowl for the leading under-16 player in the field.
Southerness youngster Scott Gibson had taken the lead going into the final round but he couldn't match McDonald's form and finished four shots back, settling for a share of second place with Shott's Graeme Duncan and Bothwell Castle's Colin Baird.
"I didn't putt well in the third round but I stuck to my game plan and knew the birdies would drop eventually," said McDonald, the grandson of former Walker Cup player Gordon Cosh.
"Hard work over the winter has made everything in my game click and I'm delighted to see it pay off."
