Open champ Catriona Matthew ready to fly the flag for Europe
Scotland’s Catriona Matthew insists she has no fear as she attempts to make history by helping Europe to their first victory on US soil in the Solheim Cup at Rich Harvest Farms.
The 39-year-old from North Berwick, will compete in her fourth Solheim Cup, won the Ricoh Women's British Open Championship earlier this month just weeks after given birth to her daughter Sophie.
The experienced US side - headed by world No.3 Cristie Kerr and 23-year-old Paula Creamer - are firm favourites for the tournament near Chicago, but Matthew believes Europe are not short of big-game players themselves and are confident of rewriting the record books.
Matthew said: “We certainly won’t be scared. They have three rookies in their team and I remember I was totally in awe of everything when I first played at Muirfield Village in 1998.
“Getting into the Solheim team was a huge goal for me this year and especially during my pregnancy it was the motivation I needed to try and get back on the course as soon as I could.
“I really thought I would have to rely on a wild card, but the win at Lytham just changed everything. Now I’ll be going out tomorrow full of confidence and really do think we have a chance.”
