Matthew leads for Brits

American Paula Creamer set the first round alight when she packed 11 birdies into a super 60 at the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic at the Highland Meadows Golf Club in Ohio.

The 21-year-old birdied the final three holes as she came within a whisker of joining Annika Sorenstam (who shot 59 in the second round of the 2001 Standard Register PING) as the only woman golfer to break the 60 barrier.

Creamer led by five shots from two South Koreans, Gloria Park and Eun-Hee Ji.

Scotland's Catriona Matthew, with three birdies in a second nine purple patch, was the leading British player on three under par 68, and was tied for ninth place after a first round that was suspended overnight due to darkness.

Glasgow's Janice Moodie was just a stroke behind on 69, while Mhairi McKay opened with a 72 to complete a reasonable opening round for the three Scots.

Matthew started on the back nine and traded a birdie at the 12th for a bogey at the 18th before her round got going with birdies at the fourth, sixth and seventh.
