Matthew finishes second to Ochoa in New Jersey
Scotland's Catriona Matthew bounced back to top form with six birdies in a super final round of 67 and she finished joint second behind Mexico's world No.1 Lorena Ochoa in the Sybase Classic at Upper Montclair Country Club in New Jersey.
The tournament was reduced to 54-holes after Friday's play was flooded out, and Matthew finished on nine under par, just a shot behind Ochoa, and in a five-way tie for second alongside Sophie Gustafson (70), Morgan Pressel (66), Brittany Lang (68) and Na Yeon Choi (69).
Matthew's reward was a cheque for £77,000 - raising her season's total close to £100,000. .
The result was well-deserved for Matthew, as she had been an unlucky loser in Friday's heavy rain. With two birdies in her first six holes, she had moved into a share of the lead when play was wiped out.
"I was disappointed, although the conditions were so awful that there was really nothing else the organisers could do," she said. "I didn't have a very good start on Saturday, which made it even more disappointing, but then I eagled the fifth (her 14th) and that was just the boost I needed.
"In the final round, I played really well, and the key all week was my putting. I've been striking the ball well all season, but not scoring. When you can't hole anything it really gets to you."
Starting the final round four shots behind Ochoa, Matthew bogeyed the third but then started to edge closer to the lead when she picked up strokes at the sixth and eighth made more birdies at the 11th, 13th, 15th and 18th in a great backward nine of 32.
"When I made a ten foot putt at the last, it gave me a little hope that I might win." Said Matthew. "But Lorena held on."
Ochoa, the defending champion, was four ahead after birdies at the second and fifth. But she was only a stroke in front after she bogeyed the short 17th - a par at the last for a 71 secured the £150,000 winner's cheque.
Matthew is now going to take a week's break before playing in the Ginn Tribute in South Carolina immediately followed by the second major of the women's season, the McDonald's LPGA Championship in Maryland.
