Matthew and Moodie in Singapore

Catriona Matthew joins Janice Moodie as the two Scots in the elite field for the HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore, and it will be the North Berwick golfer’s final tournament before the arrival of her second daughter in May.

Matthew, the Scottish No.1 won the HSBC Brasil Cup in Rio de Janeiro in January, and even when she becomes a Mum of two she intends to keep playing at the top level.

"The baby is due towards the end of May and the aim is to be back for the Evian Masters in France at the end of July," she explained. "I also want to try and retain my place in the Solheim Cup team."

Matthew has already played in three Solheims – she gained Europe’s winning point in Sweden in 2003 – and her goal this summer will be to convince European Captain Alison Nicholas that she is worthy of a wild card.

Currently ranked No. 43 in the world, she said: "There’s really no chance of me getting one of the automatic picks (she would need to be one of the top four Europeans in the world rankings) but I would like to think that I’ll be considered for a captain’s wild card.

"I think it helps that the match is in America (in Illinois in August) and I have so much experience of playing on the LGA Tour."

Matthew and her husband, Graeme, who is also her caddie, already have one daughter, two-year-old Katie and they will return to the US-based Tour as a full-time travelling family next season.

This week, Matthew admits she has fairly low expectations, but Moodie will be out to make an impression at the start of Solheim year. She is currently ranked No. 103 in the world.
