Irish youngster becomes youngest ever winner of Helen Holm Scottish Open Strokeplay Championship
Ireland’s 14-year-old Leona Maguire became the youngest winner of the Helen Holm Scottish Open Strokeplay Championship with a superb final round of two under par 73 over Royal Troon.
Completing a memorable day for the Slieve Russell Club, Leona’s twin sister, Lisa, finished in joint third place. Nairn Dunbar’s Kelsey MacDonald split the pair to take the runner-up spot.
Leona led from start to finish with rounds of 69 and 77 over Troon Portland on the first day being followed by her great finale – she birdied two of the last four holes – over the famous Open Championship links.
On six under par 219, she won the trophy by two shots from Kelsey, who had a 74 in the final round. Lisa also shot 74 over Royal Troon to share third spot on 222 with England’s Emma Brown.
Louise Kenney (Pitreavie), in joint seventh on 224, and Laura Murray (Alford), tied for tenth on 226, were the next best Scots.
Kelsey, 18, won last year’s Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association Girls’ Order of Merit, and will be one of the favourites for next month’s Scottish Amateur Championship at Southerness.
Leona and Lisa Maguire first came to fame as 11-year-olds when they took part in the Ryder Cup closing ceremony at the K Club in 2006. Last year, Leona won the Irish Women’s Amateur Championship, beating Lisa in the final. Earlier this month, Leona won the French Under-21 Open Championship.
