Paul Lawrie confident of victory ahead of Johnnie Walker Championship
Scot Paul Lawrie is convinced he can win this week’s Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles and begin his bid for a place on next year’s Ryder Cup team.
The 40-year-old will tee off with fellow major winners Michael Campbell and José María Olazábal on the Perthshire course as he looks to put a marker down in his quest to be in Colin Montgomerie's Celtic Manor team.
And Lawrie – who tasted glory on home soil in the 1999 Open and the 2001 Dunhill Links Championship – is hoping playing in his own backyard can inspire him to more Scottish success.
He said: “I would love to win at Gleneagles – if you cannot get up for these events in front of your own galleries there is something wrong.
“Some of my biggest wins have come in Scotland so I treat it as a positive and hopefully I can have a good week.
“It is an important year because the Ryder Cup qualification process starts next week so it would be nice to get my game going.
“I believe I am capable of making the team for Celtic Manor, but to do so I would need to win a couple of times this season.”
