Martin Laird to make Scottish pro debut at this year's Open
Former Scottish youth champion Martin Laird is set for an appearance at this summer's Open Championship after coming through the final qualification round in the US this week.
The 26-year-old secured his place after making it through the qualifier in Texas and will now compete in his first Open this July, which will be staged at Turnberry, just 45 minutes away from where he grew up in Glasgow.
Laird shot rounds of 67 and 65 to share third spot with Davis Love III, James Driscoll, Fredrik Jacobson, Richard S Johnson and Tim Wilkinson, American Matt Kuchar led all qualifiers on 13-under par at Gleneagles Country Club.
In a double boost for Laird he was also handed an invitation to the Barclays Scottish Open at Loch Lomond on July 9 to 12 and the American-based Scot can't wait to make his professional debut on home soil.
"I've never even played a professional event in Scotland - this is going to be great," said Laird, who finished on 10 under in Texas.
"Loch Lomond and Turnberry would be the dream return," added Laird - who stayed on in the USA after studying for a marketing degree in Colorado.
