Laing off to a flyer

Scotland’s Vikki Laing had her best start on the Ladies’ European Tour with a faultless five under par 66 and was just one off the lead after the first round of the Spanish Open at Panomarica.

The Musselburgh golfer was ina three-way tie for third place on a day when Wales’ Becky Brewerton had a 65 and shared the lead with the Spanish amateur who was runner-up in  last month’s British Championship, Carlota Ciganda.

Krystle Caithness also had a fine opening day with half a dozen birdies in 69, while a third Scottish rookie, Ellon McDonald’s Michele Thomson, birdied two of her last three holes for a 70.

Brewerton, a former English Open Champion aiming to retain her place in this year’s Solheim Cup team, highlighted her round with two eagles, while Ciganda had eight birdies and just one bogey.
