Forsyth heads the Scottish charge at the US PGA
Alastair Forsyth led the Scottish charge at the US PGA Championship – carding a one over par 73 on day one in Hazeltine National Golf Club, Minnesota.
Ryder Cup skipper Colin Montgomerie ended two shots further back with a three over par 75 at the Chaska course on a day that was dominated by Tiger Woods.
In his final chance to win a major this year Woods produced a flawless round with his five birdies, three on the front nine and two on the back, giving him a one shot lead over Padraig Harrington.
Robert Allenby, Matthew Goggin, Hunter Mahan, Alvaro Quiros, Vijay Singh and David Toms lead the chasing pack after three under par rounds of 69.
Starting on the tenth Forsyth was a model of consistency with one birdie and eight pars on his first nine but three bogeys and a solitary birdie thereafter left him one over.
Also beginning on the tenth, an indifferent Montgomerie had dropped two shots by the end of the first nine and a further dropped shot on the back, one of four single and one double bogeys for the day, left him eight shots behind the impressive Woods.
