Cink victorious at Turnberry as Watson's dream is shattered
Stewart Cink captured his first major title with victory at the 138th Open as Tom Watson's stunning challenge just ran out of steam at Turnberry.
Watson, 59, headed down the 18th safe in the knowledge all he needed was a par to capture his sixth Open title, 26 years since his last victory.
But despite a perfect tee shot and a good-looking approach shot, his ball ran through the green providing him with a difficult third.
He struck his ball to within ten feet but failed to hole the putt, ensuring a play-off ensued with Cink, who shot a final round 69, including a birdie at the last to end up on two under.
But Watson had little in the tank for the play-off and while Cink, 23 years his rivals' junior, was two under for the four extra holes, Watson dropped four shots, to hand Cink the title.
"To say this is surreal is just the tip of the iceberg," said Cink. "I grew up watching Tom Watson play hoping I could follow in his footsteps, not expecting to play alongside him.
"I'm just so happy to be part of this competition let alone end up winning it."
Earlier in the day Lee Westwood finished one under par, missing out on the play-off by just one shot, after three-putting on the final hole.
