Catriona is greedy for more

Catriona Matthew became the first Scot to win a women’s major golf championship at the Ricoh Women’s British Open on Sunday – and now she wants more.

At a get-together at Archerfield Links in Gullane – the course where she practiced following the birth of second daughter, Sophie, in May - Matthew admitted that life has been “a bit of a whirlwind” since the victory at Royal Lytham and St Annes.

“Now I want to win more majors, I’d love to win a US Open,” she said. “It’s great to have won the British, which I’ve always considered the most important. But I’m never satisfied. I want more.”

Having now guaranteed a five year exemption for the LPGA Tour, it means that Matthew and husband, Graeme, who is her caddie, can make serious plans for their golfing long-term future.

“I have got the Solheim Cup in the US in two weeks’ time and then I’m going to play tournaments in Portland and Canada plus the Samsung Women’s Word Championship,” she said. “Next year, we’ll go back and do a full season on the LPGA, probably around 20 events.

”I know it will be harder travelling with two kids (elder daughter Katie is three in Decembe) but we want to do it for another few years. We also definitely want the girls to go to school in Scotland so, when that time comes, I might play more in Europe.”

Next year, she would love to play in front of her own folk and she wants a Women’s Scottish Open to make a return to the calendar. “I’d love to play at home, and it’s really disappointing that we don’t have a women’s tournament in Scotland,” she said.

“The men have lots of events, but we really do miss out.”

At the Solheim Cup from August 21-23, Matthew will be one of Europe’s key players, and she has not ruled out the prospect of an historic first European victory on US soil at Rich Harvest Farms in Illinois.  “We’ll definitely be the underdogs, but they have a few rookies in their side,” said the veteran of four previous contests.

“I know I was completely overwhelmed at my first one. I’m also delighted that Janice Moodie is in the team. We’ve played loads of times together at Scottish and British amateur level and in the Solheim. We gel together and feel very comfortable with each other. I’m pretty sure we’ll be partners in the foursomes and fourballs.”

As for celebrating Sunday’s win that came with a £197,000 cheque, she admitted: “I’ve not been able to sit down and really enjoy it yet. We did have a couple of bottles of champagne last night, but I’ve not even looked at any of the hundreds of e-mail messages or ‘phone calls.

”I was going to check them out about 8.30pm last night, but I hadn’t slept at all the night before and I was just so exhausted that I crashed out in bed.”
