Catriona Matthew takes 11th place at lucrative World Championship in California
Catriona Matthew shot a final round 73 and finished in joint 11th place at the Samsung Women’s World Championship at Torrey Pines in San Diego, California.
The Scot earned her place thanks to her magnificent win in the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes in August and she was the only Briton in the 20-strong elite field.
While Matthew posted a level par total, South Korean Na Yeon Choi survived a mid-round scare to clinch her first LPGA victory with a closing 71. She finished on 15 under par and one ahead of Japan’s Ai Miyazato.
Seven in front at one stage on the final day, she produced a string of dropped shots and Miyazato was one ahead playing the 18th. But the new leader hit into water and ran up a bogey six while 21-year-old Choi, in the match behind, made a two-putt birdie.
Swede Sophie Gustafson was the best of the four Europeans, a final round 70 for six under par putting her in sixth place.
