James Byrne takes Tennant Cup title with birdie blitz
James Byrne left the disappointment of not being included in the upcoming European team championship squad behind him to rewrite the record books on his way to Tennant Cup glory.
The 20-year-old from Banchory took the title of the 72-hole tournament on by a seven-shot margin.
Byrne's total of 267 for a 15-under par finish was the joint second lowest in the history of the event as he blitzed the field with birdie after birdie on Sunday at Glasgow Golf Club's Killermount Course.
He led by just one shot after the first 36 holes at Glasgow Gailes but found his form on Sunday with consecutive 63's, which equalled the course record twice in quick succession.
And the Arizona State student?s Sunday scoring of 14-under for the final two rounds was the lowest third and fourth round aggregates in the history of the tournament.
Steven Carrington tried to stay on his tail with five birdies in the first eight holes of his final round but his challenge subsided.
