Laird ready to fly Scottish flag at US Open

Martin Laird has vowed to make himself a household name as he gets ready to fly the Scottish the flag by himself at the US Open.

The 26-year-old has kept a low profile since moving from his native Glasgow as a teenager to study marketing at Colorado State University and graduating in 2004.

Now living in Arizona, Laird heads to his adopted home tournament having missed the cut at the St Jude Classic in Tennessee last week ? his first missed weekend since April.

But Laird, who will be the only Scot competing across the pond ? admitted his Memphis miss may be a blessing in disguise when he gets on course at Bethpage State Park.

"It is a shame I am on the only Scotsman but at the same time I am proud of that," said Laird.

"Hopefully I can put up a good performance because I am sure there will be a lot of people in Scotland watching, not just to watch me, but to watch the US Open and it will be good to have my name up there.

"I missed the cut by one last week in Memphis but it was one of those weeks where I played well an unfortunately got nothing out of it.

"But it meant I got to Bethpage a couple of days early and managed to get a little rest."
