Rangers' Champions League hopes dented with draw in Romania
Rangers’ Champions League campaign hangs in the balance after a late goal denied them victory over Unirea.
Marius Onofras’ stunning long-range effort in the dying minutes of the game snatched a much-needed win away from the Gers after Lee McCulloch had opened the scoring.
Walter Smith’s men – who were hammered 4-1 by the Romanian side at Ibrox last month – remain bottom of Group G and must now beat Sevilla and Stuttgart to stand any chance of qualifying for the last 16.
Rangers – who named 17-year-old Danny Wilson in the heart of defence alongside 39-year-old David Weir – started well with Kevin Thomson forcing keeper Giedrius Arlauskis into a smart save early on.
Kenny Miller and Kyle Lafferty were dangerous in attack for the visitors but keeper Allan McGregor needed to be alert at the opposite end.
The stopper was called upon to thwart Vasile Maftei’s piledriver and Sorin Frunza’s effort as the hosts ended the half on top.
Steven Davis twice tested Arlauskis after the break before McCulloch’s long-range strike sneaked inside the Unirea post and looked like giving the Scottish side all three points.
But Onofras broke Rangers hearts with an 88th minute equaliser and left Smith’s men still searching their first victory in the competition.
