Scotland u-19 Women qualify for Euro Championships
Scotland U-19 Women beat the great Danes 2-1 in Switzerland last night to qualify for the UEFA European U19 Women's Championship in France.
Having beaten Belarus and drawing with Switzerland in the first two matches of the Elite Phase, the Scots went into the game with great pressure, knowing their qualification to the finals in France was dependant on gaining three points from this match. Denmark only needed a draw to qualify.
It was the Danes who went ahead after only 6 minutes with Lise Overgaard Munk scoring an early goal to settle the Danish nerves. Their lead was cancelled out in 13 minutes when Scotland's Jane Ross fired home the equaliser.
A fantastic performance by the Scots against an experienced and talented Denmark side saw them take the lead toward the end of the game when Christie Murray put Scotland into the final stages of the competition with her goal in the 84th minute.
Scotland endured further pressure in the closing minutes of the game, but managed to hold out for a glorious victory.
Head coach, Ritchie Wilson, said: "This is a fantastic achievement for the players and staff. We knew going into the game that we were here looking to take the three points and it's a wonderful feeling having done so. We look forward to France in July and pitching ourselves up against the best in Europe.'
The 2007/08 UEFA European Women's Championship Finals will be held in France in the towns of Amboise, Avoine, Blois, Romorantin, Saint-Cyr-sur-Loire, Tours and Vineuil - the first six of which were also the venues for the 2003/04 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. The tournament runs from 7-19 July 2008, with the hosts based at Blois.
Scotland will be in good company in France with the current holders Germany, England and Sweden all amongst the qualifiers.
