Signeul names squad for World Cup qualifiers

Head coach Anna Signeul has named her Scotland squad ahead of the opening Women’s World Cup qualifiers with Greece and Georgia.

The Scots, who have never qualified for the finals, will face Greece in Athens on October 24 before hosting Georgia at Tynecastle on October 29.

Rachel Corsie, Suzanne Grant and Jane Ross take their places in the 19-strong squad after scoring in the 3-0 friendly win over Northern Ireland in Belfast last Thursday.

“The first match in a qualifying campaign is always difficult,” said Signeul.

“Greece are a physical side, but with good technical ability. They were beaten by Denmark at home in their opening game of the group, so no doubt they will be keen to make amends.

“We expect a tough game in Athens, but I think we can be quite confident after our win over Northern Ireland last week. We were very pleased with that overall performance, and we’re determined to continue in the same spirit.”

Scotland Women:

Goalkeepers: Gemma Fay (Celtic LFC) (Captain), Joanna Hutchison (Spartans LFC).

Defenders: Jennifer Beattie (Arsenal LFC), Frankie Brown (Hibernian LFC), Rachel Corsie (Glasgow City FC), Ifeoma Dieke (Chicago Red Stars), Julie Ferguson (Celtic LFC), Rhonda Jones (Hibernian LFC), Amy McDonald (Celtic LFC).

Midfielders: Joelle Murray (Hibernian LFC), Kim Little (Arsenal LFC), Joanne Love (Celtic LFC), Kirsty McBride (Hibernian LFC), Leanne Ross (Glasgow City FC), Megan Sneddon (Glasgow City LFC).

Forwards: Diana Barry (Spartans FC), Suzanne Grant (Celtic LFC), Pauline Hamill (Celtic LFC), Jane Ross (Glasgow City FC).
