Somali born Celtic junior Islam Feruz called up for Scotland u-17
Scotland have invoked a recent FIFA ruling to draft Somali-born Celtic youngster Islam Feruz into their squad ahead of this month's Under-17 clash with Cyprus.
The 14-year-old Celtic striker has lived in Scotland for seven years and featured for the Bhoys in a tribute match in honour of the late Celtic hero Tommy Burns at the end of May.
Under a new directive British passport holders can play for any Home Nation in which they have been educated for at least five years.
"Islam is a fine example of the type of person that this new rule is designed to benefit," said Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith.
"The rule reflects the changes to our society in recent years, and is designed to promote social inclusion in football.
"Islam is a talented boy who has worked hard. He did not move to Scotland seeking to play international football.”
