Rangers have snapped up former France international winger Jerome Rothen on a year-long loan from PSG on transfer deadline day.

The 31-year-old was set to complete a transfer to German outfit Schalke earlier this week but that proposed move fell through, paving the way for Ibrox boss Walter Smith to make his move.

"Rangers have completed the deadline-day signing of Jerome Rothen on a one year loan deal from French side Paris Saint Germain," a statement on the club's website confirmed.

Rothen, who has won 13 caps for France and scored one goal for Les Bleus, became Rangers’ first signing in more than a year, after passing a medical at the Gers’ Murray Park training ground.

And Rothen, who helped Monaco reach the 2004 Champions League final, revealed Rangers’ participation in Europe’s elite competition was a major factor in his choice.

He said: "Obviously, the Champions League is a big draw for me. It's the competition that has created the most memories for me as a player."

Other transfers to go through on deadline day include Aberdeen re-signing Faroese under-19 striker Gilli Sorensen, 17, from TB Tvoroyrar.

And Motherwell have completed the loan signing of Charlton Athletic's former French U21 captain Yassin Moutaouakil, while Celtic’s Darren O’Dea has joined Reading on loan until January 1.
