Old Firm switch to be considered

Plans to draft Celtic and Rangers into a two-tier English Premier League will be discussed this week.

Bolton chairman Phil Gartside’s plans for two leagues containing a total of 36-40 teams – including Scotland’s Glasgow rivals – will be tabled on Thursday.

Everton manager David Moyes has thrown his weight behind the plans, as has Spurs boss Harry Redknapp, although similar plans were dismissed six months ago.

But Scotland boss George Burley refused to give his backing to Gartside’s controversial proposals.

"I'm looking at what's best for the Scottish game. There are so many equations and Rangers and Celtic have their own angles as far as finance is concerned,” said Burley.

"As national manager I'd like the two biggest clubs to be involved in Scottish football.

"But it's down to the clubs. The English scenario will take a long time to happen.

"EPL2 won't happen overnight and in any case would Rangers want to join it? They won't go straight into the Premiership.”
