Burley forced to call up Miller and Wallace as Japan squad falls to pieces
Aberdeen striker Lee Miller admitted he was shocked to receive his international call-up for this weekend’s Japanese adventure from boss George Burley on Monday.
Miller, who was called-up by Burley following a spate of injuries of the likes of Kevin Thomson and Garry O’Connor, will travel with Scotland for this weekend’s friendly in Japan.
“It is really encouraging to know that even though I haven’t been at my best this season, I’m still in George Burley’s plans,” said Miller.
“I love being involved with Scotland and it is always a great moment when you get to represent your country.
“I’m under no illusions that the only reason I have been selected is because of call-offs.
“It doesn’t bother me and it doesn’t dilute my happiness at being involved in the trip and being part of the Scotland set-up again.”
Former England under-21 Danny Fox was also due to make his Scotland debut after switching allegiances, but the injury could instead result in 22-year-old Hearts full-back Lee Wallace making his first appearance for his country instead.
Wallace said: “I was a lot more confident last season and hopefully this will help me keep improving as I'll be training with a lot of top-quality players.
“It may be a friendly, but Japan are still a top team and of course I want to play.
“I know I wasn't in the original squad, but I just accepted that and knew I just had to get on with my game and keep doing what I had been doing.”
Burley, who was already without Kenny Miller, James McFadden and Ross McCormack, is also sweating on the fitness of injury worries Scott Brown, Shaun Maloney and Stephen McManus.
