Gary McAllister to join Portsmouth in bid to save Premier status
Gary McAllister will further rub salt in the wound of the Scottish Football Association by agreeing to become Portsmouth’s new assistant manager later today (Tuesday).
McAllister last week turned down a deal to become George Burley’s new assistant boss with the Scottish national side.
McAllister, 44, who won the league title with Leeds United at the same time current Portsmouth boss Paul Hart was at Elland Road in charge of the youth team, has been out of a job since December 2008.
The former Scotland international midfielder will join a Portsmouth side who have yet to win a Premier League game this season and who are currently rock bottom of the table and pointless.
McAllister faces an uphill challenge to revive Portsmouth’s ailing fortunes, having seen Pompey sell the likes of former England internationals Peter Crouch and Glen Johnson over the summer to Liverpool and Tottenham respectively.
Arab businessman Sulaiman Al Fahim has promised to invest £50m into Portsmouth during the 2009/2010 season, meaning McAllister and Hart and will have cash to spend in January should they still be in a job by then.
McAllister has had experience as a manager working at Coventry City previously, while he also assisted former Scotland boss Walter Smith on an ad hoc basis with the national team.
