McAllister in line for Scotland coaching role

Former Scotland captain Gary McAllister has been invited to join the Scottish coaching staff according to SFA chief executive Gordon Smith.

Scotland manager George Burley has been left short in the coaching department following Steven Pressley’s departure after their World Cup qualifying exit while assistant boss Terry Butcher splits his time with Inverness.

And Smith confirmed former Coventry and Leeds manager McAllister – who previously assisted Walter Smith – will be appointed as soon as Burley gives the green light.

He said: “George has had an initial discussion with Gary and it's now up to both of them.

“If both are happy then we won't stand in the way because it's George's decision who he brings in as a coach.

“Terry Butcher is busy on Inverness club duty while we are in Japan, so George will need some support for that game.

“So I'd imagine he'll want to get someone on board within the next couple of weeks.”
