Hibernian manager Mixu Paatelainen might find there is no hiding place if his team's miserable pre-season
Hibernian manager Mixu Paatelainen might find there is no hiding place if his team's miserable pre-season form carries over into their Clydesdale Bank Premier League campaign.
But Paatelainen believes his players can hit peak form when it really matters against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Saturday.
He said: "I'm delighted the season is here, at last. It's been a long summer and now the league starts, and hopefully we will start winning."
The Easter Road outfit have scored only two goals and have won none of their eight matches in a lengthy build-up to their SPL curtain-raiser. A goalless draw with Raith Rovers aside, the capital men have lost all their games.
They crashed out of the Intertoto Cup to Elfsborg last month, were hammered 6-0 by Barcelona and lost to Cowdenbeath and Clyde before completing the warm-up with defeats to Middlesbrough and Wigan.
Paatelainen has come in for criticism from supporters and has had to deal with wild rumours suggesting he was ready to resign following poor performances.
However, the Finn has maintained all along that his side's friendlies had only one purpose, which was to ensure a positive result on the opening day of the season against Kilmarnock.
"I can understand the supporters' concerns," he said. "Whenever they see their team get beaten they are not happy, they expect to see their team win all the time. Unfortunately that doesn't happen.
"I expected us to win more in pre-season. It didn't happen, but we've now analysed the games and hopefully learned one or two things from that.
"That's why we had a pre-season. The purpose is to do well in the league. The league starts now and hopefully we will win the game, and if we do then pre-season has been great."
