Fletcher blames players

Darren Fletcher insists the players must shoulder the responsibility for Scotland’s failure to reach the World Cup and not under-fire boss George Burley.

Burley’s job is on the line after Scotland’s failure to reach the play-offs following Wednesday night’s 1-0 defeat to Holland, with SFA chiefs set to meet next week to discuss his future.

But captain and Manchester United star Fletcher is adamant the players are equally to blame.

“We did not do the manager justice in this campaign,” said Fletcher.

“He has taken loads of criticism. Even before a ball was kicked, there was criticism.”

But Scotland and Rangers striker Kenny Miller insists the players are not wholly to blame.

“At the end of the day he has not done enough, same as us players,” said Miller.

“But, in terms of the manager having the backing of the players, there is no doubt when you see that level of performance.”
