Rangers on a low as Smith and Edu lament worst ever evening
Walter Smith has launched a scathing attack on his European flops after their 4-1 humiliation at the hands of Unirea Urziceni.
Rangers got off to a dream start with Pedro Mendes opening the scoring within two minutes then conceded a Marius Bilasco equalizer on 33 minutes before a second-half capitulation that saw them lose three goals.
And Smith – whose side remains bottom of Group G – was pulling no punches as he made a brutally honest assessment of his side’s horror show against the Romanian champions.
He said: “It was a very disappointing evening – this is possibly the lowest point for me as a manager in Europe.
“We lost three goals in the second-half and that type of defending is simply not good enough. We should be able to handle those situations better.
“Those three goals were ones that you shouldn’t lose at any level of football and that was the most disappointing factor.
Edu abused
Meanwhile Rangers midfielder Maurice Edu has claimed he was racially abused by the club’s own supporters.
The 23-year-old insists a number of Gers fans targeted him as he returned to his car following the 4-1 Champions League defeat to Unirea Urziceni.
Edu – who is capped internationally by the United States – played no part in the match but attended Ibrox to watch the Group G game from the stands.
And Edu wrote on his Twitter feed: “Not sure what hurt more: result last nite or being racially abused by couple of r own fans as I’m getting in my car.”
