SPL and SFL Saturday round-up - Celtic go top
SPL
With Rangers not in action, Celtic took the opportunity to exert some early season pressure with Marc-Antoine Fortune and Shaun Maloney both netting doubles in a 5-2 win at home to St Johnstone.
Maloney’s jinking run set up Fortune to grab his first goal in five competitive games since arriving at Celtic and then the winger extended the advantage with a smart header.
Colin Samuel reduced the visitors’ arrears before the break following a Gary Caldwell mistake but Maloney and then Fortune scored within 60 seconds of each other to seal the win.
Scott McDonald added a fifth 15 minutes from time prior to Jody Morris helping himself to a late consolation.
Hibernian also made it two wins from as many games as a double from Derek Riordan ensured that manager John Hughes’ return to Falkirk ended in positive fashion.
Ryan Flynn’s first goal in Scotland put Falkirk ahead on 25 minutes but the visitors were level four minutes before the break when Soulemane Bamba nodded in John Rankin’s corner.
Riordan then turned the game in Hibernian’s favour just before the hour and then scored a free-kick to put the result beyond doubt ten minutes from time.
Aberdeen picked up their first points of the season thanks to a 3-0 win at bottom-of-the-table Hamilton.
Charlie Mulgrew bent in a free-kick to open the scoring and within five minutes Andrew Considine’s first of the season extended the lead.
Christopher Maguire struck the third after the interval.
John Sutton grabbed his 30th Scottish Premier League goal to put Motherwell on the road to a 3-1 win over Kilmarnock.
Ross Forbes doubled the advantage from the penalty spot before half time, with Shaun Hutchinson adding a third before Jamie Hamill pulled one back two minutes from time.
Elsewhere, Dundee United maintained their unbeaten record in a goalless draw at St Mirren.
SFL
Dundee’s Gary Harkin scored both goals for his side as they drew 2-2 with Inverness Caledonian Thistle to maintain both side’s unbeaten status this season.
Midfielder Harkins opened the scoring for the home side at Dens Park before Dai Sanchez equalised for the side relegated from the SPL last season.
The 24-year-old scored his second nine minutes later to continue the form that saw him nominated for the First Division Player of the Year while at Partick Thistle last season.
But 19-year-old midfielder Lee Cox salvaged a point for the away side.
Peter Weatherson was the hero for Morton as his two goals sent Ayr United crashing at Somerset Park.
The 29-year-old striker, who has been the club’s top scorer in each of the last five seasons, scored a goal in each half as Morton lifted themselves from bottom of the table.
Ayr’s manager Brian Reid was trying to guide his side to a victory against his old club, but the promoted side looked inferior in all aspects of play.
Queen of the South beat Partick Thistle 1-0 at Palmerston Park thanks to a late goal from David Weatherston.
The forward scored eight minutes of time as the disastrous start for last season’s runner’s up continued.
Meanwhile striker Graham Bayne inspired Dunfermline to a 2-0 win against Airdrie United at East End Park, sending the side to the top of the league.
Bayne, celebrating his 30th birthday, scored a first half goal before an own goal from an Airdrie trialist sealed the win.
Promoted Raith Rovers beat Ross County 1-0 courtesy of a Dougie Hill goal at Victoria Park.
A first-half double from defender Alan Lithgow helped Clyde on their way to their first-point of the season in a 3-3 thriller against Dumbarton at the Strathclyde Homes Stadium.
The 20-year-old defender opened the scoring on 15 minutes and doubled the visitors lead on 24 minutes with a deftly taken finish.
Defender Michael Dunlop got one back for the home-side just before the break and striker Roddy Hunter levelled the scores on 63 minutes.
Clyde looked to have secured the three points when they went 3-2 in front two minutes later but defender Iain Chisholm broke Clyde hearts on 86 minutes with a powerful finish to level the score.
Cowdenbeath gained their first-point of the season in a 1-1 draw against high-flying Alloa thanks to a first-half strike from striker Gareth Wardlaw.
Wardlaw gave the home-side the lead on the half-hour mark but Alloa striker Andy Scott equalised on 41 minutes to share the points.
Elsewhere, an equaliser in the 86th minute for Stenhousemuir striker Iain Diack was enough to secure a 2-2 draw at Peterhead.
Gary Thom put the home team in front before Neil McVitie and striker Martin Bavidge gave Peterhead the lead to set-up Diack for his late heroics and a 2-2 draw.
East Fife drew 1-1 with Arbroath with goals coming from Fife striker Steve Crawford and Arbroath’s Robbie Ross.
And a goal inside ten minutes from Martin Grehan was enough to secure all three points for Stirling as they beat Brechin 1-0.
