Celtic draw Arsenal in Champions League

Celtic will face English giants Arsenal in a Battle of Britain to determine who will qualify for the Champions League proper.

Tony Mowbray’s side will face the Londoners, who finished fourth in the English Premier League last season, after dramatically coming through 2-1 on aggregate against Dinamo Moscow.

Celtic, 1-0 down from the first leg, levelled the tie through Scott McDonald before Georgios Samaras snatched an injury-time winner to send his side through.

As the Glasgow club were not seeded, it meant there was the possibility of them being drawn against Arsene Wenger’s men.

Qualifying for the Champions League proper can prove very lucrative for sides. Last season, clubs earned between £4.6m and £20.4m. In addition, they were entitled to a share of the £237.31m television pot and matchday income, which for the top sides can be £3m per match.

The draw is split into two paths - one featuring ten non-champions from higher-ranked countries, such as Celtic and Arsenal, and the other featuring ten champions from lower-ranked countries.

The five winners from each path will progress to the group stage where they will join the 22 automatic qualifiers, including SPL champions Rangers.

The Ibrox club could yet end up in the second pot of seeds, but it all depends if teams currently seeded above them qualify for the group stages.

If two of the four – from Arsenal, Lyon, Sporting Lisbon and Panathinaikos – fail to qualify, Rangers will move up from the third pot to the second, in theory giving them an easier group.

The first leg will take place at Parkhead on August 18/19 with the return leg at The Emirates Stadium a week later.
