Arsenal too classy for Celtic at the Emirates
Arsenal 3 Celtic 1 (Arsenal win 5-1 on aggregate)
Celtic boss Tony Mowbray was left fuming at the Emirates after Arsenal striker Eduardo appeared to dive and earn the Gunners a first-half penalty.
Eduardo raced on to a through ball in the 28th minute and as Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc dived at his feet, the Croatian appeared to go down without a touch.
Eduardo, who suffered a horrendous broken leg against Birmingham in 2008, dusted himself down to score the penalty and effectively kill the tie as Arsenal moved 3-0 ahead on aggregate.
The Croatian could have had two more goals before the break as he stabbed a close range effort wide and saw Boruc paw his long range effort around the post.
The best Celtic had to offer in the first-half was a disallowed Scott McDonald goal.
After the break Arsenal went up a gear – Nicklas Bendtner combining with Emmanuel Eboue for the Ivory Coast midfielder to double the Gunners lead after 53 minutes.
And the game was wrapped up in the 74th minute as Arsenal substitute Andrey Arshavin made it 3-0 to Arsenal.
Celtic refused to wave the white flag and with the final kick of the game Massimo Donati scored a sensational volley to make it 3-1 on the night and 5-1 on aggregate.
CiS Cup
Elsewhere in the CiS Scottish League Cup, Kenny Deuchar and Steven Milne both grabbed doubles for St Johnstone as they hammered Division Two leaders Arbroath 6-0 in the League Cup at Gayfield.
Milne grabbed the opener in the 24th minute before Felipe Morais added a second and Deuchar opened his account.
Milne then put the result beyond doubt on the stroke of half-time before Deuchar made it five in the 67th minute and sub Collin Samuel grabbed a sixth.
Premier League Hibernian avoided a potential banana skin in the shape of Brechin as they recorded a 3-0 win at Easter Road.
Ian Nimmo’s own goal gave Hibs the perfect start in the tenth minute before goals from Derek Riordan and Paul Hanlon wrapped up the win.
St Mirren beat ten-man Ayr 2-0 while Dunfermline edged past Raith courtesy of a 3-1 victory.
