Burley challenges new faces ahead of Japan clash

Scotland manager George Burley has challenged his makeshift squad to prove their worth during Saturday’s friendly with Japan.

Burley’s squad has been decimated with injury following the withdrawals of ten players including the likes of Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher and Birmingham City’s James McFadden.

The mini-crisis means Burley is set to hand debuts to up to five players, and the former Hearts and Southampton manager has urged the new faces to seize their chance.

"It's an opportunity for a number of players to show they've got and give me a headache the next time I announce the squad," said Burley.

"It's a game where we can experiment with players, which is very important.

"We know what your Fletchers and McFaddens can do, but it's nice to have a look at other players too.

"In my time with Scotland, players have come in and surprised us. We had Steven Naismith and Steven Whittaker in the last couple of games, who were outstanding; we had Ross McCormack against Iceland, who came in and was outstanding.

"That's what you're looking for, we've brought 18 players and most of them will play."
