100 cap veteran Gemma Fay to be honoured by Scotland
Scotland captain Gemma Fay will be honoured for reaching the 100 cap landmark when she leads her team out to take on Italy in an International Challenge Match tonight at Rugby Park. (KO 7.30pm)
The goalkeeper, who plays for Hibernian Ladies FC, joined fellow centurions Julie Fleeting (Arsenal) and Pauline Hamill (Celtic) when she guarded the goal against Russia in the Cyprus Cup last month – when the Scots emerged as 2-1 winners.
23-year-old Joanne Love will also be honoured for reaching the 75-cap milestone, and with many years of top flight football still ahead, is also likely to join the 100-club in the future.
Fay, 27, won her first cap as a 16 year old, a match she still remembers vividle, as she told the Scottish FA website: “My first cap was in 1998 against the Czech Republic. We had to win the game to qualify for Category A play-offs for the European Championships. We drew 1-1, which meant we would have to win our next match 17-0 to get through ahead of the Czechs.
“Their players were celebrating at the final whistle, but we had the last laugh because we did indeed beat Lithuania 17-0 in the next game!
“It feels fantastic to reach 100 caps. This time 11 years ago I didn’t think for a minute that I would still be here. I’ve played with some amazing players and had some real highs along the way. It’s a great privilege to be capped so many times for your country.”
Scotland will be without star performers Fleeting, who is expecting her first child, and Ifeoma Dieke, who had commitments to her professional club, Chicago Red Stars, in the new US Women's Professional Soccer League.
