Celtic handed tricky draw in Europa League

Celtic have been handed a tricky draw for the inaugural Europa League after failing to qualify for the group stage of the Champions League.

Tony Mowbray’s side went down 5-1 on aggregate to Arsenal in their Champions League qualifier and will now face Hamburg, Hapoel Tel-Aviv and Rapid Vienna in Group C of the new-look UEFA Cup competition.

There are 48 teams at this stage of the competition, split into 12 groups of four.

The top two each group will be joined by the eight teams that finish third in their Champions League group.

The first round of matches is scheduled for September 17, with the final taking place in Hamburg on May 12 2010.

Meanwhile, strikes from Michael Stewart and Marius Zaliukas were not enough for Hearts to overturn a first-leg deficit as Dinamo Zagreb progressed in the Europa League play-off clash.

Trailing 4-0 from the first leg, few people gave Hearts a chance but they did not count on an erratic display from Dinamo goalkeeper Tomislav Butina.

Despite denying Gary Glen early on, he made a hash of gathering a routine cross allowing Stewart to bring the home team back into it.

The Hearts captain then smacked a shot against the crossbar with Butina again hopelessly out of position.

Worse was to follow in the second half for the visiting keeper when on 55 minutes he allowed Zaliukas’ weak shot to trickle past him and into the net.

That left Hearts with 35 minutes to conjure up two goals but despite Butina finally doing something right when he saved from Ismael Bouzid, Zagreb held on.
