Scotland's Richard Kruse has missed out on a place at the Beijing Olympics by the narrowest of margins after losing at the European qualifying tournament in Lisbon, Portugal.
The 24-year-old had been one of the favourites to earn a place in the team after finishing eighth in the men's foil at the Athen's Olympics four years ago.
But Kruse, who has been struggling with an ankle injury, could not do enough in Lisbon to beat a strong qualifying field.
He made history for Great Britain two years ago when he became the first Briton to win a major fencing medal since 1936, picking up silver at the European Championships.
Kruse will now set his sights on preparing for the 2012 Olympics in London.
