Matthew D’Agostino settles for bronze at UK School Games
Edinburgh athlete Matthew D’Agostino scooped a bronze for fencing at the UK School Games in Wales last weekend.
The 16-year old from Morningside was the defending UK School Games champion in the sabre but admitted the competition had stepped up a level since last year after losing out to England’s Soji Aiyenuro in the semis.
“I don’t think there was any pressure on me to win again,” said the St Thomas of Aquins High School student.
“The field this year was a lot stronger and I knew it would take a pretty special performance.
“I’ve been struggling with a foot injury recently and it has been holding me back a little bit but I don’t want to use that as any kind of excuse.
“I still won a medal and I‘ll be going to my next tournament, the Hamlet Open in Stratford-upon-Avon, in good spirits next week.”
