Hoy safely through

Scotland’s Chris Hoy continued his imperious form for GB today in the men’s sprint at the Beijing Olympics.

After cruising through the opening rounds, today Hoy secured his place in the semi-final by making short work of Mohd Awang of Malaysia.

In an event that sees two racers slowing pacing round the track, waiting for the other to break before a mad dash to the line, Hoy is proving he has added tactical smarts to add to his raw power in the man-on-man arena of the sprints.

Awang attempted to out-wit Hoy by playing games on the track.  First he attempted to surprise Hoy with an early take off, but the muscular Scotsman simply put his foot on the gas and blazed beyond his 20-year-old opponent, taking a 1-0 lead (best of three).

Next, the Malaysian took the opposite route, slowing to a complete stop before trying to out-manouvre Hoy from a standing start.  But no such luck.  Hoy swatted the youngster away to take the race 2-0.

"This has helped my confidence," said Hoy. "I'm just taking things one step at time. I'm not looking at anything beyond the semi-final."

The powerful Scot will meet Mickael Bourgain in the semis on Tuesday after the Frenchman saw off the challenge of Dutchman Theo Bos.

"He's a class rider," added Hoy. "I'll be giving him every ounce of respect he deserves and not playing to his strengths.

"I've been keeping away from reading my emails, looking at the internet or watching the news. I'm trying to keep myself in a little bubble and avoid all distractions at this stage.

"It's been a long four days but I still feel strong, I've surprised myself with how strong I feel.

"There is just one more day to go and I can rest on Tuesday night. It's about giving the next 24 hours a 100 per cent focus."

Hoy’s Gold-winning team-sprint accomplice Jason Kenny will join him in the semis after he defeated Frenchman Kevin Sireau, while Bradley Wiggins led GB to a world record breaking gold in the men’s team pursuit.
