Athertons dominate as big guns gear up for Fort William
At the UCI World Cup in Vallnord, Andorra at the weekend, it wasn't just England's Dan Atherton who was putting his pedal to the metal to win the 4-Cross discipline ahead of reigning World Champion, Brian Lopes of the USA.
For as the stars of world mountain-biking prepare to kick-start the sixth UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in Fort William on Friday, who could blame the Atherton family for feeling confident of success in Scotland.
For on Sunday, Dan's 20 year-old sister (and 2007 World silver medallist) Rachel won the women's downhill whilst just hours later their brother Gee, a 2007 bronze medallist at the 2007 World Championships, won the men's downhill event.
The men's downhill also saw Scottish downhill rider Ruaridh Cunningham back in action, finishing in 34th place and 10 seconds off the pace of the winner.
33rd last month in the first downhill of the season in Slovenia, 19 year-old Cunningham is still trying to ease himself back into his World Cup biking saddle after suffering a horrendous knee injury over the winter.
Fellow Scot, Chris Hutchens, finished in 38th place in Sunday's downhill.
In the men's cross country, Julien Absalon, the reigning World Champion and 2006 Fort William World Cup winner lost the first World Cup race of this year - finishing in 11th place and over 3 seconds off the pace of winner Christoph Sauser of Switzerland.
