Davidson looks to sharing the track with Hoy as key ambition
RISING CYCLING star Magnus Davidson has his heart set on competing alongside hero and record-breaking Olympian Chris Hoy at the Commonwealth Games.
The 17-year-old Square Wheels team member – who has had just three weeks’ off in five years - is currently embarking on a gruelling winter of training in the Scottish Highlands.
Davidson was competing at the Wales National Velodrome while Hoy and co. were hogging the headlines in the Beijing, claiming eight cycling gold medals in the Chinese capital.
And the Ross-Shire teenager is determined to follow in the flying Scot’s footsteps.
“I’m back in training and am raring to go,” said Davidson, who won the three kilometre pursuit at the Scottish Championships in July.
“I’m aiming to be in peak condition for the spring when all the important competitions are and I’ll be looking to break into the top ten.
“Having watched and listened to the Olympics it’s made me all the more determined to succeed and to be doing that myself one day.
“At the moment I enjoy road racing just as much as I do track racing and I’m open to both. I went to Glasgow for the Tour of Britain stage and that was fantastic as well.
“The Commonwealth Games are in Glasgow in 2014 and that would be the ultimate dream. To represent my country and maybe even in the same team as Chris Hoy.”
Hoy, widely-tipped to scoop a knighthood in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List, claimed three golds in Far East to become Britain’s most successful Olympic cyclist.
And Davidson revealed the his countryman’s heroics are the perfect inspiration as he bids to continue British cycling’s success story when the Games come to London in four years’ time.
“Chris Hoy is just unbelievable,” he added. “His dedication and his attitude are fantastic and he’s really down to earth.
“I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times and hopefully I’ll get the chance to meet him again soon.”
