Cunningham disappointed while Oban pair impress
If Saturday's cross-country was enthralling, Sunday's downhill riders produced a gravity defying spectacle for the final day of the 2008 World Cup in Fort William.
Facing a daunting course that plunges 555 metres in under 2-miles, in the women's closely fought downhill, England's Tracy Moseley charged down the bone-dry track to record the fourth Fort William World Cup win of her career.
Sabine Jonnier of France, the reigning World Champion took second with Rachel Atherton (Shrewsbury) in third.
The men's race was no less intense with the 'hot seat' (leading rider) constantly changing places as the riders blasted down a treacherous with aptly named sections like Hip Replacement!
Ultimately, it was the South African, Greg Minnaar who repeated his Fort William win of 2004 to take gold by three seconds over British pair Gee Atherton (Shrewsbury) and 14 time World Cup winner, Steve Peat (Sheffield).
Yet, it was a day that also saw 20 year-old Ben Cathro enjoy his day in the sun.
The Oban based downhill rider, 17th at Maribor, Slovenia in the first World Cup of the season, gunned down the course to finish a career best 8th.
Fellow Oban resident Chris Hutchens also rode strongly on the day, finishing 17th.
Cathro will compete at the World Championships in Italy in a fortnight.
Sadly, there was to be no fairytale repeat success story for Galashiels based Ruaridh Cunningham who who was crowned World Junior Champion on the same course last year.
Having only recently returned from injury, the 19 year-old professional crashed and once again injured his knee.
