British tour to finish in Gretna

First minister Alex Salmond has confirmed that the Scottish stage on this year's Tour of Britain will start in Peebles and end in Gretna Green.

The annual race, which set Tour de France star Mark Cavendish on the road to the top, will pass through the Scottish Borders on September 14.

The 93.2 miles stage, the third of this year's race, will also visit Melrose, Langholm and Newcastleton en route to a thrilling finale in Gretna Green.

Mr Salmond said: "The south of Scotland will provide a stunning backdrop for competitors and spectators alike.

"Scotland has produced world-class cyclists across various disciplines, in turn encouraging Scots of all ages and abilities to take to our roads, hills or tracks.

"The Scottish stage should prove to be an exciting sporting event, held amid some spectacular scenery, and I'm sure many people will come along to enjoy the atmosphere."

Well done Scottish Borders communities.

I'm just disappointed that in this Year of the Homecoming more was not done to promote Robert Burns connection by using the A76 - Dumfries to Kilmarnock route. This would have promoted; Elisland (Burns last farm), Dalswinton (the first steam boat), Drumlanrig (where the "true bike" was invented), Sanquhar (where Burns was thrown out because of the late Mrs Oswald),
New Cumnock (home of sweet Afton), following the river Nith all the way.
How many Scottish icons could they have mentioned on the way?

Shame on us.

Again. Well done Borders.
This will help promote cycling in your area.

Cheers, Aulyin

Scottish government wants Scots to get out and about so why don't they promote events like this in the media?

Just click on ‘Sportspace’ down the left-hand menu bar to take you to the registration page. It's easy.

Cheers, Aulyin
