19-year old Eve Muirhead given GB skip role ahead of Winter Olympics
Teenager curler Eve Muirhead has been selected as the skip for Great Britain's training team ahead of the Vancouver Winter Olympics next February.
The 19-year-old is one of three skips in the quintet, along with Jackie Lockhart and Kelly Wood, but despite her tender age the youngest member of the squad has been given the nod.
Veteran Lockhart will take up the role of vice-skip, while Wood - who skipped Scotland at the European Championships in December and has three Scottish titles to her name - has been chosen at second.
It marks a stark contrast from the 2006 approach when the female rink was named less than two months before the start of the Turin Games.
In Italy, 2002 gold medallist Rhona Martin was named along with a number of rival skips in a mish-mash squad that ended up fifth.
"Naming the positions of the squad in advance gives us maximum opportunity going forward to shape and gel together as a team, until the final team selection and positions are announced in December," said Olympic head coach Nancy Murdoch.
"I believe this combination of athletes offers the greatest potential for success in Vancouver 2010."
