Murdoch eyes gold

David Murdoch will set his sights on Olympic gold after claiming his second world title in four years with a thrilling victory over hosts and hot favourites Canada in Monckton on Sunday.

The 30-year-old kept his nerve to ensure his Scotland team edged out Kevin Martin's Canada 8-6 in a final which brought back memories of Rhona Martin's epic last-stone win in Salt Lake City.

Murdoch is almost certain to skip the Great Britain team to Vancouver next year and said: "At the start of the week you hope to get to the final and get a good game against Canada. To come here and beat them three times, I think it shows what belief this team has."

He added: "At the start of the week it was unthinkable to beat them in even one game. So to do what we've done is unbelievable. It shows we're doing something right and we're playing a tough game."

Three of the Murdoch team members - himself, Ewan MacDonald and Euan Byers - were in the squad that went to Turin as medal hopes in 2006 but fell away after a bright start and were eliminated.

There was also disappointment in Salt Lake City where the team, then skipped by Hammy McMillan, dissolved into arguments and could not manage to make it through the round-robin stage.

Now Murdoch will have to get used to the weight of expectation once more after clinching victory following a bizarre choice by veteran rival Martin to throw away his first stone in the final end.

"I was a little surprised he wasn't peeling the guards," added a delighted Murdoch.

"He wanted to control that four-foot zone and he did it well. But he left us a few openings and in the end it worked to our advantage."
